Spain U21 – Romania U21

Suspensions: None

Injuries: Gerard Martín, Ieremai (both Spain)

Spain

As expected, Spain’s U21 squad, affectionately known as 'La Rojita', kicked off their Euro 2025 campaign with a hard-fought victory, living up to their status as one of the tournament favourites. However, the win came at a cost, as left-back Gerard Martín suffered a wrist injury early in the opening match and has since left the squad.

Against hosts Slovakia, Spain started strongly, securing a two-goal lead by midway through the first half. Right-back Marc Pubill opened the scoring with a close-range finish following a precise cross from Diego López down the right flank. Moments later, Mateo Joseph doubled the advantage, capitalising on another right-wing delivery this time from Juanlu. Joseph expertly shrugged off his marker and timed his run to perfection.

After gaining a comfortable lead, Spain appeared to ease off the gas. Warning signs emerged before halftime but the visitors held firm. Unfortunately, Slovakia struck early after the break, exploiting Spain’s defensive lapse. Within minutes, Nino Marcelli, who had assisted Samuel Kopásek earlier, earned a penalty which Tomas Suslov confidently converted. Coach Santi Denia reshuffled his lineup to inject fresh energy, gradually regaining pressure, yet it took until the 90th minute for Spain to restore their lead. Valencia academy graduates coordinated the decisive move – Xavi Guerra delivered the cross, Cristian Mosquera battled for possession, and César Tarrega finished clinically. With time running out, Slovakia had no chance to respond.

Romania

Romania’s U21 side is making their fifth overall and fourth consecutive appearance at the European Championship finals. Their best showing came in 2019 in Italy and San Marino, where under Mirel Rădoi’s guidance, they topped a tough group featuring France, England, and Croatia, before falling 2-4 to Germany in the semi-finals. Two years later, Romania narrowly missed out on the playoffs, finishing third in their group level on five points with the Netherlands and Germany but losing out on goal difference. At the last Euros, hosted by Romania and Georgia, the 'Tricolorii' struggled, earning just one point and finishing bottom of a group containing Spain, Ukraine, and Croatia.

Following that disappointing home campaign, Daniel Pâncu took over as head coach. Under his leadership, Romania secured qualification for the Slovakia-based tournament by winning their qualifying group with 22 points — edging Finland by two, Switzerland by four, and Albania by six, while Montenegro and Armenia lagged behind significantly. Although the group draw was unfavourable, confidence remains high within the squad.

Romania began Euro 2025 with a narrow defeat to Italy in Trnava. The Italians held a slight edge in the first half and converted it when Tommaso Baldanzi scored in the 26th minute. Romania had a great chance to equalise before the break when Luis Munteanu missed a penalty he himself had earned. After the interval, they created further opportunities, notably squandered by Rareș Ilie, but were unable to find the net.

Spain vs Romania: Expert Prediction

According to UEFA’s official statistics, this will be the sixth encounter between Spain and Romania at the U21 level. Spain have dominated, boasting four wins against Romania’s single victory in previous five meetings. At Euro 2023, 'La Rojita' thrashed Romania 3-0, having also won two friendly matches against them in 2019 and 2022. Currently, Spain remain clear favourites and have a genuine chance to secure their quarter-final spot early.

Romania, much like Slovakia earlier in the tournament, could challenge the favourites and create moments of tension. Still, it’s hard to see past Spain eventually prevailing to claim the victory their quality suggests.
