Spain

"Furia Roja" easily qualified for the 2026 World Cup, winning five of their six group matches. They achieved these victories over five rounds, without conceding a single goal. But in the final match, the Spaniards relaxed their guard a bit, settling for a 2-2 home draw against Turkey, a team they had previously thrashed 6-0 away. Thanks to this strong run, the current Spanish team has set a new national record for the longest unbeaten run in official matches. It now stands at 30 games, 25 of which have been won under coach Luis de la Fuente. At the World Cup, Spain will play Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in their group, so there is every chance that this impressive run can be extended even further.

Meanwhile, Spain's overall unbeaten run has reached 27 matches, including 21 wins. On March 27, the team was originally scheduled to play Argentina in Qatar in the so-called Finalisima. But security concerns have forced the game to be cancelled. Instead, Furia Roja hosted Serbia in a friendly in Villarreal and won convincingly 3-0. A first-half brace from Mikel Oyarzabal gave the hosts a solid lead. Then, midway through the second half, debutant Osasuna winger Victor Muñoz sealed the deal.

Egypt

The Pharaohs will be making their fourth World Cup appearance this summer. Hossam Hassan's side dominated their qualifying group, five points ahead of nearest rivals Burkina Faso. They also faced Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti. In ten qualifying matches, Egypt won eight and drew two. They will face Belgium, New Zealand and Iran in their group at the tournament, a formation that looks perfectly acceptable on paper. It is a real chance for them to win their first ever World Cup and reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Egypt recently competed in the Africa Cup of Nations and narrowly missed out on the final, losing to Senegal. A few days later, Hossam Hassan's team lost on penalties to Nigeria and ended up in fourth place. But the Pharaohs quickly recovered, thrashing Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Jeddah. Goals from Issa, Trezeguet and Zizou before half-time gave them a commanding lead. Shortly after the restart, Marmoush put the finishing touch to the score.

Spain vs Egypt: Author's Prediction

Luis de la Fuente is likely to make a significant rotation of the squad, but that won't change Spain's status as the clear favourites. Twenty years ago, in their only previous meeting with Egypt, the Spaniards won 2-0. Now they have a great chance to at least repeat that result. However, it is entirely possible that the Furia Roja will win by an even bigger margin this time.
