"Rayo Vallecano"
Inigo Perez's team has crossed the 40-point mark, which is usually sufficient to avoid relegation. However, they are only three points away from the European competition zone, yet it seems that the Madrid side has no desire for European football. They are simply not ready for it, and the consequences of an unprepared team can be seen in the current season's results of Girona or Espanyol from a few years ago. On the other hand, there are many unprepared teams at the moment, and almost every round, these contenders skillfully drop points, seemingly conceding places to their rivals.
Rayo Vallecano's reluctance to compete in European competitions is evident in their attitude during matches. Previously, the "Lightning" would suffocate their opponents with pressing and fight for results, but recently they have appeared rather inert, as if they have no objection to losing points. At the end of March, the Madrid side ended a five-match winless streak with a 2-0 away victory against Alaves, but they are now on a new negative streak. It started with a humiliating 0-4 home defeat to Espanyol. In the following round, Inigo Perez's team predictably lost 1-3 to Athletic in Bilbao, then drew 1-1 at home with Valencia, and just a few days later, they predictably lost the derby against Atletico at the Metropolitano – 0-3.
"Getafe"
The "Azulones" are currently the closest challengers to Rayo Vallecano, trailing by two points and just a step away from the desired 40-point mark. They are seven points clear of the relegation zone, so there is no need to panic just yet. However, it is worth noting that Getafe's results have worsened recently. Out of their last five matches, the "blues" have won only one, thrashing the hopeless Valladolid 4-0 away at the beginning of April. However, in their next away match, Jose Bordalas's team lost 0-1 to Espanyol in Barcelona.
At home, the "Azulones" have suffered three consecutive defeats after a somewhat historic comeback victory of 2-1 against Atletico. First, Getafe lost 1-2 to Villarreal, then fell 1-3 to Las Palmas, who celebrated their first victory of 2021, and in the previous round, they suffered a narrow defeat to Real Madrid – 0-1. The Madrid side started the match better and converted their advantage into a goal in the 21st minute. The favorite created many more excellent chances but failed to score again. The "Azulones" noticeably improved after the break and had several opportunities to equalize, but their finishing let them down as well.
Rayo Vallecano vs Getafe: Predicted Line-ups
Rayo Vallecano will be missing two key players due to suspensions – first-choice goalkeeper Augusto Batalla and starting right-back Andrei Ratiu, who will definitely start next season with another, more prestigious team. Additionally, they will also be without main center-back Abdul Mumin, whose absence has caused noticeable problems in defense. However, Getafe also has its losses. Due to suspensions, the visitors will be without versatile player Kristantus Uche, one of Jose Bordalas's key players, as well as forward Alvaro Rodriguez. Furthermore, they will also miss starting left-back Diego Rico, talented winger Koba, and forward Juanmi.
Rayo Vallecano vs Getafe: Author's Prediction
Both teams face significant squad issues that could affect the quality of play and the result. Rayo Vallecano currently has a seven-match unbeaten streak against Getafe, but five of those matches ended in draws. A draw seems to be the most likely outcome of the upcoming match. However, I would still consider Getafe the favorites, as they have generally performed well away from home in 2025, and despite recent defeats, they have shown more character and desire to earn points than Rayo Vallecano.
