PSV
Known as the "Farmers," PSV has fallen behind both Feyenoord (11 wins) and Ajax (14 wins) in terms of Dutch Cup victories, yet they are the favorites to lift the trophy this season. The majority of their cup triumphs were in the last century, with the Eindhoven side having secured four titles in the recent years: 2005, 2012, 2022, and 2023. Last season, under head coach Peter Bosz, they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Feyenoord after a narrow defeat.
In the current tournament, PSV began with an emphatic 8-0 victory at home against amateur side Koninklijke. Mid-January saw them narrowly overcome second-division side Excelsior at home in a thrilling 5-4 extra-time win. During this match, they had fallen behind 0-2 and 1-3 before pulling one back in the 86th minute, and then equalizing with a dramatic goal from Ismael Saibari, assisted by Luuk de Jong, deep into stoppage time (90+7). Goals from Pepi and Perisic in extra time sealed the win for the Farmers, despite the visitors managing to score once. In the quarter-finals, PSV avenged their previous defeat to Feyenoord with a convincing 2-0 home victory, where goals came from Johan Bakayoko and Guus Til.
Beyond their successful runs in the Dutch Cup, PSV also reached the Round of 16 in the Champions League this year. This was achieved after two wins against Crvena Zvezda and Liverpool (3-2 each) secured them a playoff spot, and then they stunned Italian giants Juventus by progressing with a 4-3 aggregate win after extra time in the return leg at home. However, recent performances in the Eredivisie have been disappointing, with only one victory from six matches in 2025; they scraped a home win against NAC (3-2) but suffered a surprising 1-3 defeat to Zwolle while drawing four matches. This has resulted in PSV slipping to second place in the league, now five points adrift of Ajax.
Go Ahead Eagles
The "Red-Yellows" have never won the Dutch Cup in their history. Their closest encounter with the trophy was in the distant 1964-65 season, where they lost 0-1 to Feyenoord in the final. In the following three tournaments, they reached the semi-finals, and faced this stage three more times during the 1980-81, 2009-10, and 2021-22 seasons, each time losing to the eventual winners: AZ, Ajax, and PSV, respectively. In the last two editions, the Eagles were eliminated in the Round of 16, suffering narrow defeats to Den Haag and NEC.
This season, Paul Simons' team kicked off their cup journey with a tense penalty shootout win over Sparta Rotterdam after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time, winning 5-4 in the shootout. A month ago, they achieved a minor upset by defeating a stronger Twente side, coming back from trailing at halftime with three goals in the second half from Oliver Edvardsen (now with Ajax), captain Mats Dale, and attacking midfielder Mathis Suray. In the quarter-finals, the Eagles faced a significantly weaker opponent in Nordwijk from the third division, which they overcame with a comfortable 3-1 victory, with Suray opening the scoring and contributing to two own goals from the visitors.
Last weekend, the Red-Yellows faced the Eredivisie leaders in Amsterdam and duly fell to a 0-2 defeat, with Edvardsen scoring the second goal against his former team, sealing the outcome. Now they face another challenging away trip to Eindhoven, followed by a league match against the Farmers at home this weekend, making for a demanding fixture list.
PSV vs Go Ahead Eagles: Predicted Line-ups
In PSV's camp, Sergiño Dest remains sidelined, with forward Ricardo Pepi also ruled out for the remainder of the season, while Malik Tillman is still recovering from injury, and newcomer Esmir Bayrakterevic is unavailable. For Go Ahead Eagles, Luca Everink, Oscar Petersson, Sören Tengstedt, and Finn Stokkerts are out, and after last weekend's match in Amsterdam, key player Jakob Breum – currently the top scorer for Simons' Eagles – has joined the injury list, with early indications suggesting he could miss the rest of the season.
PSV vs Go Ahead Eagles: Author’s Prediction
Recently, PSV has often dropped points even in home matches. However, the team enjoyed a break last weekend, which should leave them fresh and focused on securing victory in the cup semi-final. Earlier this season, the Farmers triumphed 3-0 at home against Go Ahead Eagles, extending their unbeaten run against this opponent to 17 matches. Moreover, in the past 30 years, PSV has consistently claimed victory over Go Ahead Eagles at home. I am confident they will win again, and likely do so fairly comfortably.
