Just a few days after the defeat to Lorient, PSG will be looking to get back to winning ways in their home match of the 11th round against Nice. Despite some setbacks, the Parisians remain at the top of Ligue 1, with five teams only two points behind. Another mistake could easily knock them off first place. The visitors, after a poor start, have made an impressive comeback - their four-point deficit to PSG underlines that momentum.
PSG
PSG are repeating last season's pattern, but with disappointing results in key competitions. Last season, Enrique's team only secured a place in the Champions League knockout stages in the final round, although they eventually lifted the trophy for the first time. In the league, their title win was convincing - a 19-point lead over their nearest rival, and their first defeat came after the championship. Now defending their European title, the capital team has made a flawless start to the league phase, defeating Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as beating Barcelona with a far from full squad. However, consistency at home has been elusive.
This was evident in the midweek draw with Lorient, where they scored just one goal against a team with one of the weakest defences in the league. One miss led to a 1-1 draw. Ilya Zabarny was playing out of position on the wing and struggled to score. However, the Ukrainian has shown his reliability in the centre of defence, as evidenced by last weekend's 3-0 win over Brest. Overall, PSG have four games in which they have dropped points, but before Lorient, only other European contenders have given them trouble. Draws of 1-1 and 3-3 against Lille and Strasbourg, as well as a 0-1 defeat at Marseille - their first league defeat at the Velodrome since 2011.
A return to Parc des Princes should be a boost for Enrique's men. They have scored 12 times in their last five home games. They have also kept a clean sheet in three of their four home games - the only exception being a 3-1 draw against Strasbourg. Furthermore, PSG have not lost a home match in November in a row since 2020.
Nice
After finishing fourth last season and qualifying for the Champions League, Nice were hoping to make a quick start this year. But that has not happened. Eze's second season in charge began with two qualifying defeats to Benfica, which led to relegation to the Europa League. The team will play their fourth group match there this week, but have yet to pick up a point - defeats to Roma, Fenerbahce and Celta.
To make matters worse, the home season has also started badly, with just eight points from their first seven matches. Devastating away defeats to Le Havre (3-1) and Brest (4-1) signalled deeper problems. Just when it looked like things could only get worse, especially given the difficult schedule, Nice suddenly found their form. They failed to hold on to a two-goal lead against Monaco (2-2), but the wins have continued. They are now on a three-game winning streak. Notably, they have beaten the top teams at home, 3-2 against Lyon and 2-0 against Lille in midweek. This is only their second win on aggregate this season. The run leaves Nice one point ahead of last year's pace after 10 rounds. Diop has scored in five consecutive games, spurring Eze to a turning point.
On the road, the Eagles have taken four points from their last two trips, a stark contrast to their early defeats on the road. Eze's team have scored two or more points in five consecutive matches, so they will arrive at the Parc des Princes full of confidence. Especially considering they have won twice in their last three trips to Paris, scoring three goals each time, including a 3-1 win at the end of last season.
PSG v Nice: Expected Line-ups
Doué has returned to PSG's injury-plagued side alongside Ruiz. Lee Kang-in's participation is questionable after illness. Hakimi and Neves could return after minor injuries. Nice have a long injury list: Ndayishimiye, Bombito, Dante, Moffi, Abdelmonem. Cho and Klaus are questionable.
PSG v Nice: Author's Prediction
PSG are not looking unbeatable in the league at the moment, so Nice could spoil the champions' day and at least snatch a point. I expect an exciting match in which both teams find the net.
