Netherlands
The Orange easily qualified for the next World Cup, topping their group against Poland, Finland, Malta and Lithuania. In eight matches under Ronald Koeman, they have won six and drawn two against the Poles, who could potentially play them in the final if they beat Sweden in the decisive play-off. We know that the Dutch will face Japan and Tunisia on American soil this summer. It is worth noting that the Netherlands' last defeat came over a year ago, in October 2024, when they narrowly lost to Germany in the Nations League. Although the Orange did not lose, they did not reach the semi-finals after losing on penalties to eventual finalists Spain. Ronald Koeman's team is currently on a 13-match unbeaten run - five draws and eight wins. Their most recent victory came just a few days ago at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, a 2-1 friendly win over fellow World Cup participants Norway. Virgil van Dijk equalised in the first half, before Theun Koopmeijers scored the winner shortly after half-time.
Ecuador
La Tri also successfully qualified for their second consecutive World Cup and fifth overall. They began the qualification process under Spanish coach Félix Sánchez, but he resigned after the 2024 Copa América and Sebastián Beccachese took over to see things through. Ecuador finished second in the South American standings, although nine points behind leaders Argentina. They were still one point ahead of Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay. La Tri won eight of their 18 qualifying matches, drew eight and lost just twice – both of which were narrow defeats to top-flight opponents.
The South American qualifiers ended in September, so Ecuador have only played friendlies since then. Three of their four games against eventual World Cup hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada ended in draws under Sebastián Beccachese, while they beat New Zealand 2-0 in the other. Just a few days earlier in Madrid, they had drawn 1-1 with Morocco. A goal from John Yeboah just after half-time put La Tri ahead 40 minutes into the match, but they were unable to hold on. Despite the loss, Ecuador extended their unbeaten run to 18 games overall – eight wins and ten draws. That's a month longer than the current series of their upcoming opponents.

Netherlands vs Ecuador: Author's Prediction
This will be the fourth meeting between the Netherlands and Ecuador. The first, a friendly 20 years ago, ended in a narrow victory for the Orange. They drew another friendly in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup, and in the last final they were in the same group and finished 1-1. I don't see Ecuador getting their first win over the Dutch here. I'm also skeptical that Sebastián Beccace's team will continue their unbeaten run. But I expect La Tri and the Orange to put in a solid scoring run this time around.
