Mexico vs. Ecuador: Betting Odds
Neither Mexico nor Ecuador's progress to the round of 16 was a surprise, based on the predictions before the tournament. Both teams are considered strong teams capable of making a statement, perhaps even reaching the round of 16. The question is how they got there. Mexico showed one of the strongest results in the group stage, while Ecuador cruised through their group and pulled off a late surprise when expectations had already faded. The home team is the clear favorite. They have fared much better in the group stages, will enjoy a fervent home crowd and have a historical advantage in their meetings with Ecuador, including their 2002 World Cup encounter, which Mexico won.
Bookmakers are offering odds of around [2.20] on Mexico, [2.90] on a draw and [4.00] on Ecuador.
Mexico
Mexico's performance in the group stage has been controversial at home. Some have called three straight wins a testament to their quality, while others have pointed to a weak opposition. Despite this, they have joined Argentina and France as the only teams to have collected nine points while keeping a clean sheet in every game: 2-0 against South Africa, 1-0 against South Korea and 3-0 against the Czech Republic. Spain also remained unbeaten, but they scored fewer goals and dropped points.
Mexico must now show that they belong among the contenders. Even a win here would likely set them up for the round of 16 with England, then Brazil and Argentina if they maintain their form, and then a final where Spain, France or Germany could play. In short, Ecuador is their last relatively insurmountable obstacle.
Ecuador
Ecuador proved to be both a disappointment and a shock in the group stage. They picked up just one point from their first two matches, losing to Ivory Coast and drawing with Curacao. Needing to beat the undefeated Germany in the final game, they lost in the second minute, but pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory and advanced to the playoffs with four points. The bigger problem remains determining their true level: a win over a downtrodden Germany looks less impressive when they next play a Mexico team that has yet to concede a goal.

Mexico vs. Ecuador: Author's Prediction
Mexico seems to me not so much a convincing favorite as a more cohesive lineup. They boast home support, a stingy defense, and an effective attack. They won all three games in the group stage without conceding a single goal. I would be shocked if Ecuador won, so I'm betting on Mexico reaching the quarterfinals, taking into account extra time and penalties if necessary.
