One of the central encounters of Ligue 1's 18th round will be the clash between Lille and Nice at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium. This match is crucial in the context of the battle for a Champions League spot. Following the first half of the season, the "Eagles" have capitalized on their competitors' misfortunes, climbing to fourth place with 30 points. The "Dogs" trail closely behind with just one point less.
Lille
This week, Lille achieved an impressive milestone of 20 matches unbeaten across all competitions. The last time the "Dogs" managed such a feat was in the 2011 season when they clinched the championship title. However, a title challenge is not on the cards this time around, as Lille, despite their long unbeaten streak, slipped out of the top four after their last outing. Coach Genesio's side was held to a disappointing draw against Auxerre, with the circumstances of the match suggesting they dropped points - their opponent played with 10 men for more than half an hour, and David missed a penalty. Following the game, Genesio acknowledged the result as fair but hinted at dissatisfaction with some players who have lowered their expectations during the transfer window. This may include David himself, who has been linked with various top teams for several seasons. Nevertheless, the Canadian has continued to impress this season, finding the net 11 times in the league to lead the scoring charts.
Lille certainly needs more wins, as seven draws in their last ten matches confirm this. If they continue on this path, the "Dogs" risk missing out on participating in the Champions League for the second consecutive season. Interestingly, in the prestigious European competition, Genesio's men have amassed 13 points after an initial defeat to Sporting, which included victories over both Real and Atletico, securing their spot in the tournament's knockout stage. Next week, the "Dogs" will face a tough test with an away trip to Liverpool.
This week, Lille lifted their spirits by returning with a victory from another tough away fixture, defeating Marseille in the Round of 16 of the cup. Unlike their last match, they managed to secure a narrow lead after Haraldsson's goal but conceded in the 90+6th minute. Nonetheless, the "Dogs" converted all four penalty attempts, while Mannone saved two shots. The upcoming match against Nice also promises to be challenging, even though Lille has only lost once at home this season and has three wins in their last five games. However, they've only managed to beat Nice twice at home in their last 16 encounters, in 2019 and 2021, with nine matches ending in draws.
Nice
By bringing Frank Eze to the managerial helm, the club's bosses aimed to find the right person to achieve their long-standing goal - qualification for the Champions League. The team has qualified for the tournament only once in its history but was eliminated in the qualifying round. Currently, to gain direct entry into the prestigious European competition, they must secure third place; fourth place would see them face qualifiers. Eze's side is currently occupying this position after the first half of the season, marking progress from last year, where they finished fifth under Farrioli. However, maintaining this position will not be easy as the competition is right on their heels.
On the other hand, Nice is now considerably more optimistic about the season's outcomes than at the campaign's outset. They managed only 10 points from their first eight matches, with wins only against newcomers Angers and Saint-Etienne. In the subsequent nine matches, they lost just once, alongside six victories and two draws. Additionally, their attacking efficiency has improved lately, with only one goal scored in a 1:4 defeat to Lyon. In the remaining six matches, the "Eagles" scored at least two goals. Hessan and Laborde are the most prolific in the team, netting 8 and 6 goals respectively. Nonetheless, the defenders under Eze have also conceded significantly, allowing 11 goals in their last five matches. They have kept a clean sheet only three times in this championship, making a narrow 1:0 victory over Bastia in the cup this week seem rather unusual.
To enhance their domestic league results, Nice has had to sacrifice their European campaign. In the Europa League group stage, only Kyiv's Dynamo is lower in the table than Nice, and their chances of advancing to the knockout stage are diminished. Consequently, their upcoming match against Elfsborg is more of a formality. Away from home, Nice has not performed as confidently as at home. However, a recent 4:2 win against Reims could bolster their confidence, following draws with Nantes and Montpellier and a heavy loss to Lyon. Overall, the "Eagles" have only won three times on the road in the league, but they certainly have a chance to at least avoid defeat at Pierre-Mauroy, where they previously drew 2:2 in the first half of the season.
Lille vs Nice: Predicted Line-ups
Zhegrova, Mbappe, and Fernandez-Pardo are sidelined due to injuries. Bentaleb and Umtiti are expected to return soon, but are not ready to play yet. Sanson, Boga, Moffi, and Orakpo will miss out due to injury, while Bombito and Kloss may be in contention after their recoveries.
Lille vs Nice: Author's Prediction
Considering Lille's tendency for draws and the historic meetings between these two sides, I would not be surprised if neither team emerges as the victor once again. However, I expect both teams to find the back of the net.
