Genoa vs Lecce: Bookmakers' Odds
Genoa
Genoa performed well last season under Patrick Vieira, but the Frenchman urged his players to move on from those achievements. "Let's put last year behind us. We're ready to kick off the season. We've focused heavily on achieving balance in both defensive and offensive play. We're heading in the right direction; we have players with grit and skill up front, but we need that perfect equilibrium to compete more effectively on the field.
Did we have a poor transfer window? I don't think so. We're a team that operates with great humility. We know the championship will be tough. Let's not dwell on last year. Yes, when I arrived, we were in a precarious position, but the players responded well, and we held on, securing our spot with about four or five games to spare. Winning a Serie A match will be challenging, and we shouldn't forget that. We have a strong squad, but we need to build confidence and work on the players' instinctive reactions to get the most out of this group.
We're in good physical shape, but there's still room for tactical improvement. I think both Genoa and Lecce are prepared for the season start. Di Francesco knows Serie A well, and I believe they're ready for the fight.
Oosterwolde and Ekuban are injured, but we're set for Lecce. We've prepared thoroughly, though our Cup performance showed we still have work to do. By the way, we were pleasantly surprised to see 22,000 fans at the stadium during the cup match," Vieira noted.
In the Italian Cup, Genoa defeated Vicenza Virtus 3-0. In that match, Ruslan Malinovskyi came on in the 59th minute.
Lecce
Lecce managed to stay in Serie A only in the final round of the 2024/25 championship. However, the club's management took note and made changes, bringing in Eusebio Di Francesco as head coach instead of Marco Giampaolo. Di Francesco doesn't have a great track record with underdogs. In Italy, people are already joking that Lecce has signed its own "death sentence" by hiring a coach with a "black mark" - he couldn't save Frosinone or Venezia in Serie A over the last two seasons.
Just days before the championship began, Lecce also sold their top scorer from the previous season - Nikola Krstovic moved to Atalanta. It seems in the first round, the Apulians will rely in attack on their 17-year-old newcomer Francesco Camarda.
"We started serious preparations some time ago. If we had approached the Italian Cup lightly, you'd call me superficial. I believe the team needs to be serious and focused right from training. That's how you learn to tackle matches and venues like the one in Genoa, which will be demanding. We know the team we're up against; they've altered their attacking setup in the middle and forward areas, with excellent players and even strong substitutes. We'll need a robust fighting spirit.
We'd prefer the transfer window to close earlier. But that's just talk - I hear it from everyone: coaches, directors, players. What's important is not to make excuses: I'll try to field the sixteen best players I have. We shouldn't dwell on what's missing or what won't be there.
Is there an alternative to Camarda? I'll have to think creatively, maybe introduce a false nine. Sottil, Banda, or a more attacking midfielder could help us: it might be a stopgap solution, or perhaps I'll uncover a real striker, like Napoli did with Mertens. Sometimes setbacks turn into successes," Di Francesco noted.

Genoa vs Lecce: Author's Prediction
Genoa is the clear favorite in this match, and I'd be greatly surprised if Vieira's team drops points here. The Griffins began their preseason preparations early - to build physical fitness quickly and be fully ready for the first Serie A round. Malinovskyi's team is playing at home against one of the league's main underdogs, who've lost their key attacking threat.
Prediction: A clean-sheet win for Genoa.
