October 19, 2025 18:15. Lorient. Stade du Mustoire
French Ligue 1. 8th round.

Injured: Fadiga, Adjei, Karim, Toure, Caceres (?), Sanoussi (?) - Del Castillo, Labeau, Tousard (?), Balde (?)

On Sunday, as part of the eighth round of Ligue 1, we will see the Breton derby - Lorient will host Brest at the Stade du Mustoire. Both teams are stuck in the bottom half of the table after seven games. The visitors have a slim eight-point advantage, while the hosts are just one point behind.

Lorient

Lorient have made a swift return to Ligue 1 after their relegation in 2024. Under Pantaleoni, they topped Ligue 2 last season, but nothing is guaranteed in the top flight. Their squad has not improved significantly - in fact, some positions look weaker. This was evident even before the October international break, when the team lost to Paris in a crushing defeat, a team they played evenly last season and even finished higher.

Nevertheless, the return home gives the Merl some hope that things will change. Of course, they suffered a brutal 1-7 defeat at Lille, conceding all their goals after the break. But the stadium has also produced two victories this season: a 4-0 rout of Rennes and a sensational 3-1 win over Monaco. However, those surprises came when their opponents were reduced to ten men. In those games, Lorient scored seven of their nine goals.

Sunday could be Lorient's first consecutive home win in the top division since 2022, when they won their first four Ligue 1 games. Merlieu have won three consecutive league matches in which they have scored more than once, earning points in nine consecutive Ligue 1 games under similar circumstances. Pantaleoni's men are unbeaten this season when they score first, dropping points only once - a 1-1 draw with Le Havre. It is encouraging that they have won seven of their previous nine Breton derbies in Ligue 1. Their last home match against Brest in 2023 ended 2-1.

Brest

Brest have rewritten their history in recent years. Two seasons ago they secured third place and a place in the Champions League. Last season's debut in the elite European competition was solid, reaching the round of 16. However, maintaining these heights in Ligue 1 has proven difficult - ninth place was not a disaster, but it meant the lack of a second consecutive European exit. The Pirates sold some key players in the summer, but kept the architect of their success, coach Roy. Incoming transfers have been modest, given one of the smallest budgets in the league.

So it's no surprise that Brest have had a shaky start, with just one point from four games and a place in the relegation zone. But Roy seems to have stabilised things, with a three-match unbeaten run heading into the October break. They have won at home against Nice and a 2-0 away win over Angers. That run was ended by a goalless draw at home to Nantes. On the positive side, Roy's side have kept two clean sheets in a row - not bad for a team that has scored 11 goals in its first five games.

A clean sheet on Sunday would be their first back-to-back clean sheets away from home in Ligue 1 since January-February this year, when they managed three. They could also make it three wins in a row without conceding a goal for the first time since February-March last year. The Pirates have won their last two Breton derbies against Lorient by an aggregate score of 5-0, as well as two of their previous three away games at Moustoir.

Lorient v Brest: Expected Line-ups

Fadigha, Adjei, Karim and Toure are all out for Lorient, while Caceres and Sanoussi are questionable. Del Castillo and Labeau are out for Brest, while Tousard and Balde are still hopeful of making the cut.

Lorient v Brest: Author's Prediction

Lorient are feeling pretty strong at home. I expect Brest's goalless streak to end, and the match will likely end in a draw or a narrow victory for the visitors.
