Saturday's schedule for Matchday 3 of Ligue 1 kicks off with a clash at Stade du Moustoir, where Lorient hosts Lille. The hosts earned their first three points of the new season with a convincing win over Rennes last weekend. The visitors remain unbeaten, picking up four points from their first two matches.
Lorient
Lorient still vividly remembers their last season in Ligue 1. On the final day, the "Merlus" lost out on survival to Metz via tiebreakers and were relegated straight from the French elite. It took a year to regain their top-flight status. Under Pantaloni, who knows both how to promote a team to Ligue 1 and how to get relegated with Ajaccio, the side won Ligue 2, edging out ambitious Paris FC among others. Now, Lorient's goal is to solidify their place among France's elite.
The first match back didn't go well—a narrow defeat away to Auxerre, who followed a similar path the year before by winning Ligue 2. However, their home opener was triumphant, crushing Rennes 4-0. The scoreline is impressive, but it stemmed from the opponents' disastrous errors, including being reduced to nine men by the 11th minute. Rennes held on for most of the first half but conceded in stoppage time to Sumano, then crumbled after the break as Tosin, Paji, and Le Bri sealed the rout.
Now, Lorient faces a tougher test against Lille, who have regularly competed in European competitions in recent seasons. Although Lille are favorites here, Lorient has reason to be optimistic, as they've performed well against the "Dogues" at Stade du Moustoir in recent years. The Merlus have won their last three home meetings, with their most recent loss dating back to 2021. Away from home, though, Lorient has consistently lost to Lille during that period. Overall, Lorient's winning streak at home stretches back to March, with at least three goals scored in each of their last six matches. Still, most of those games were in Ligue 2, so context matters.
Lille
Lille couldn't maintain their standing from the 2023/24 season and slipped down the table last campaign. It was a disappointing drop, going from reaching the Champions League round of 16 to now playing in the Europa League. The inconsistency in the second half of the season, where points were irregularly collected, was to blame. The summer departures of key players, notably goalkeeper Chevalier and striker David—who moved to PSG and Juventus respectively—only heighten doubts about Lille's prospects this season.
So far, they've managed to address issues, at least in attack. Olivier Giroud's return to France was seen by many as a desperate move, given the striker's age despite holding the record for France goals. Yet, the 38-year-old is proving that age is just a number. He showed good form in preseason friendlies and carried it over to official games. In the opener against Brest away, he scored one of three goals, though Lille couldn't hold on, drawing 3-3 after leading twice. The home match against Monaco was different, with the scoreline goalless until late, and Giroud's goal proving decisive. Beyond on-field contributions, the veteran has boosted Lille's merchandise sales by 50%.
Lille's Europa League campaign starts mid-September, so they'd like to enter it with as many points as possible. A win over Ligue 1 newcomers Lorient would be crucial, especially since away games have been tough—they've won just three of ten in 2025, with two draws and five losses. Given their poor record at Stade du Moustoir lately, this could be a real challenge for Genesio's side. On the flip side, stats are encouraging: Lille have won 19 of their last 24 matches against Ligue 1 newcomers.
Lorient vs. Lille: Predicted Lineups
Kadiou, Fadiga, Adjei, and Isak Touré are out for Lorient due to injuries. Moukau joined Lille's injury list after the Monaco game, where Mbappé, Santos, Sahrawi, and Usman Touré are still sidelined.
Lorient vs. Lille: Author's Prediction
Lorient has been solid at home, and if Lille does win, it's likely by just one goal. I wouldn't be surprised by a draw either.
