Saturday's schedule of the sixth round of the French Championship will begin with a match at the Stade du Mustoire, where Lorient will host Monaco. The home team's return to Ligue 1 has not been smooth, leaving them in penultimate place. Instead, the visitors have stumbled just once and have risen to the top of the Ligue 1 table after their first defeat at the hands of PSG.
Lorient
Lorient have avoided a long stay in Ligue 2, returning to the top flight in their first season after relegation. Merlus have had the best record in the second division, even beating the well-funded Paris FC. So manager Pantaleoni, who took charge last season, has reason to be pleased. His task now is to keep Merlus in Ligue 1 and avoid the immediate relegation he already suffered with Ajaccio.
So far, such an outcome seems plausible, as the start of the season has been anything but ideal. Their only win came in the second round, a 4-0 home win over Rennes. But the key to this dominant victory was simple - their opponents reduced their squad to nine men by the 11th minute. In their other four games, they have only picked up one point, earned away against Le Havre last weekend. Tosen scored first in the first half but were unable to hold on to the victory, settling for a 1-1 draw. Still, conceding just one goal is a step up for a team that had conceded eleven goals in their previous meetings: 1-7 at home to Lille and 0-4 away to Marseille. Those 13 goals conceded make them the most porous defence in Ligue 1 at the moment.
The 1-7 defeat starkly highlighted the gap between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, given that Lorient had conceded just six goals in their previous nine home games. Ahead of this match against the league leaders, these heavy defeats to other teams at the top of the table are a cause for concern. On the other hand, Monaco have been a relatively good opponent for the Merlues in recent years. At least they have managed to avoid defeat in their last two meetings. Lorient's last home defeat to this opponent dates back to 2021 at Moustoir, and since then they have collected points in three consecutive meetings.
Monaco
Monaco's qualification for the Champions League - for the second year in a row - started disastrously. The Monegasques conceded four goals away to Club Brugge, with only Fati's late goal softening the blow. It was the Spaniard's debut and first goal for the club. But the Barcelona loanee, who was keen to revive his career, did not stop there, scoring twice in the next Ligue 1 match. Two goals conceded by Metz could not spoil the celebration, as the underdogs scored five goals in return. This crushing defeat put Monaco ahead of their opponents on goal difference and took the top spot.
However, maintaining that position will not be easy, as last season's gap to PSG of more than 20 points underlines. This season, the Monegasques have usually shown productive matches, scoring two or more goals themselves, often allowing their opponents to score. A vivid example was their victory over Strasbourg: Monaco created a two-goal lead, squandered it, but snatched victory late in the match thanks to a goal from Minamino. Their only defeat came in a game where Hütter's men failed to score, away to Lille, who won 0-1 on aggregate.
Thirteen goals in five matches are the league's highest. However, only two of those have come from Hütter's men away from home this season. Encouragingly, Monaco remain unbeaten in their last 12 Ligue 1 away games against newly promoted teams, a run that began with a 5-2 win over Lorient in January 2021. Resilience in difficult situations has contributed to the success of the club from the principality in 2025, when they collected 14 points, losing positions, the best result in Ligue 1 during this period.
Lorient v Monaco: Expected Lineups
Fadiga, Adjei, Sanusi and Toure will not play for Lorient due to injuries, while Yongwa is serving another match of suspension. Monaco's injury list includes new goalkeeper Hradetskyi, as well as Golovin, Zakaria and Mavissa. Wanderson's status is uncertain, but Pogba has returned to training with the group and could soon make his debut for his new team.
Lorient v Monaco: Author's Prediction
A clash between the league's best attack and worst defence is expected to produce plenty of goals. I think Monaco will take another three points in their signature style - with a total score of over 2.5.
