Augsburg vs. Stuttgart: betting odds

Although Stuttgart comes from Baden-Württemberg and Augsburg from Bavaria, we are in for a real derby here. Why? Because both teams have roots in the so-called Swabian region. Swabia is a region in southwestern Germany, encompassing Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, home to the Swabians, Germans who speak a distinctive Swabian dialect. The boundaries are vague and interpretations vary, but it is safe to say that the entire state of Baden-Württemberg is within its borders. Augsburg, in particular, is located in what is known as Bavarian Swabia. For punters, this match may not mean much. But for fans who value history and local traditions, a good performance in this match is crucial - regardless of the wider goals of the season.

In terms of betting, Stuttgart are among the favourites, despite playing away. This is partly because they have won their last six head-to-head meetings with Augsburg. Two of those wins came at the WWK Arena.

Augsburg

Augsburg are still in the top half of the table, but two consecutive defeats have essentially destroyed their hopes of reaching European competition. They are now seven points behind Eintracht Frankfurt, and closing the gap with eight games remaining seems almost impossible. Of course, those losses were against the top teams: first a 1-2 defeat at Leipzig, then a 0-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. Both were away games. There are also tough matches ahead. Starting with Stuttgart, then Hoffenheim, Eintracht, and later Bayer. It is hard to imagine that you can collect the maximum number of points against such opponents to stay in the fight for the European championship. Of course, there is consolation in the fact that you are close to surviving in the Bundesliga for another season - that was the bare minimum. However, I doubt that the fans and the club's management will be thrilled with, say, ninth or tenth place. But, to be honest, that is about all Augsburg have earned this year.

Stuttgart

Stuttgart's exit from the Europa League was a somewhat shocking defeat, as they lost both legs of the round of 16 to Portuguese side Porto. With all due respect to the Dragons, I was convinced that Stuttgart would go through. In fact, I considered the Germans one of the favourites to win. But defeats in both legs (1-2 and 0-2) put an end to that dream. On the one hand, it is a disappointment for everyone - a missed chance to win a trophy and secure a place in the Champions League. On the other hand, it frees up energy for the Bundesliga and the German Cup. The season won't be legendary for Stuttgart, but it can still be considered a success if they finish in the top four and lift the cup. To achieve this, they cannot afford to drop points against supposedly easier opponents, such as those draws with Mainz (2-2) and Heidenheim (3-3), teams that were struggling to avoid relegation.

Augsburg vs. Stuttgart: Author's Prediction

It's hard to predict how a team will recover from their Europa League exit, but on paper Stuttgart is much better than Augsburg. In addition, they have been a fighting team for the home team, winning their last six meetings. So I would advise you to take a chance and bet on Stuttgart to win.
