Aroca
Last season, Aroca finished in seventh place, surprising many in Portugal. However, the club underwent significant changes over the summer. Firstly, the architect of this team, 39-year-old manager Daniel Souza, departed for a bigger role at Braga. He has been replaced by Spanish coach Gonzalo Garcia, who lacks a successful track record, having previously managed Twente and Croatian side Istra 1961, and most recently was without a job.
Secondly, key players who played a pivotal role last season left the club. Notably, Mukhika (who moved for a record €10 million) and Christo, who helped Aroca earn a historic €16 million. Numerous free agents and loan players have been brought in, but building a new team will take time.
Sporting
On the last day of the transfer window, Sporting made a surprising and costly acquisition by signing Danish forward Konrad Hager from Nordsjaelland for €19 million. This marks the fourth most expensive transfer in the club's history. Interestingly, in the same transfer window, the Lions also brought in Zeno Debast and Maxi Araújo, who both rank among the top 10 most expensive signings for Sporting. Overall, the Lisbon club spent nearly €53 million this summer while generating approximately €40 million through sales. It is rare for Portuguese clubs to spend more than they earn on transfers, but this reflects the club's serious intentions to compete for another league title while aiming for a strong performance in the Champions League, which would also lead to significant UEFA prize money.
The bold purchase may have been influenced by their 2-0 victory over Porto in round 4. The Lisbon club won deservedly and confirmed that Sporting is the main favorite for the gold medals this season. Although many believed Hager would replace Djokeresh, it has been decided that the Dane will need time to adapt, so he will gradually integrate into the starting lineup.
Aroca vs Sporting: Author's Prediction
In the first four rounds, Sporting scored 16 goals, conceding only two – both to Porto. The rest of the teams have seen the Lions score between 3 and 6 goals. Considering Aroca's weak start this season, I would recommend betting on Sporting's individual total of over 2.5.
