Como vs Lecce: Match Preview and Predictions
December 30, 2024. 19:30. Como. Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium
Serie A, Round 18
Como vs Lecce
Potential Absentees: Maxim Perone - Chalon Gaspar, Frédéric Gilbert, Joan González, Lamek Banda, Andy Pelmer
The match between Como and Lecce is not just a clash of two neighboring teams in the standings (16th against 15th), but a battle between two clubs fighting for survival in Serie A this season. While survival is a familiar battle for Lecce, many expected more exciting performances and better results from Como given the financial backing of the Serie A newcomers. With Cagliari and Venice already losing in Round 18, Como and Lecce will seek to avoid slipping into the relegation zone before the start of 2025.
Como
2024 is almost at its end, with only two Serie A matches remaining in Italy. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the performances of the clubs. Many teams have disappointed their fans, notably Roma and Milan, particularly the Romans. However, Como cannot be overlooked either. Upon their promotion to Serie A, numerous European outlets touted Como's incredible potential and ambition, especially given that they are owned by the wealthiest individuals in Italian football. There were expectations that the new boys would at least contend for a place in the upper half of the table, if not for Champions League football. Unfortunately, that has not materialized. Instead of battling for European spots, Como is now entrenched in a relegation fight, and for now, the club can only be relieved not to be in the drop zone.
Como invested approximately €50 million in squad reinforcements over the summer. They also brought in excellent players on free transfers (Sergi Roberto, Pepe Reina, Alberto Moreno, Raphael Varane) and on loan (Maximo Perrone). While not all transfers have been successful, the club should certainly be competing for European places given the strength of their squad. However, Como has struggled against more modest teams with limited financial capabilities. Thus, there is no blame directed at the club's management; rather, a question remains: does Cesc Fabregas truly fit the objectives set for the club? With respect to his playing career, as a coach, Fabregas has so far disappointed. Under his guidance, Como has played 18 matches: 3 wins, 6 draws, and 9 losses. They have scored 22 goals and conceded 35. It is difficult to gauge the level of trust in Fabregas, but I believe the upcoming rounds will be crucial for him.
Lecce
Last season, Lecce finished 14th, narrowly avoiding the relegation zone by just three points. Now, history seems to be repeating itself, as the club is once again fighting for survival, lingering near the drop zone. The situation mirrors last year, with Lecce letting in many goals and scoring very few. The team's points tally reflects this precarious position. The only difference is that last season, the club's management dismissed the coaching staff in March, but this year, they acted swiftly, parting ways with the coach in November. Marco Giampaolo has secured 7 points in 5 matches with Lecce, a commendable feat considering the quality of opposition they faced, including Juventus, Lazio, Roma, Venice, and Monza. If the team continues to perform as they have, they will distance themselves from the relegation zone.
Projected Line-ups: Como vs Lecce
Predictive Analysis: Como vs Lecce
With the new coaching staff, Lecce plays a more attractive brand of football and delights fans with positive results. Como surprised fans with their victory over Roma, but it is important to note that the Romans are deeply mired in crisis this season. I anticipate that the match against Lecce will pose a far greater challenge for Como, and my suggestion is to bet on the visitors not losing.
