Brazil

The Seleção are still considered one of the best teams thanks to their past achievements, but they have not lifted the World Cup in over two decades. In four of the five tournaments since their victories in Japan and South Korea, Brazil have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage. They only reached the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup on home soil, where they were thrashed 1-7 by Germany, before losing the third-place play-off 0-3.

Under Tite, appointed in 2016, results improved and the Copa America was won on home soil in 2019. Two years later, Brazil hosted the continental tournament again, but lost in the final to eventual world champions Argentina. Tite left after a disappointing 2022 World Cup. He was followed by three different coaches before Carlo Ancelotti took charge in May last year.

Under the Italian, Brazil completed CONMEBOL qualification. Their opponents in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup will be Morocco, Haiti and Scotland. Ancelotti's first game in charge ended in a 0-0 draw in Ecuador, followed by 1-0 home wins over Paraguay and 3-0 away wins over Chile, before a 0-1 defeat at home to Bolivia. Brazil finished fifth in the standings, level on points with three opponents and one away, behind Ecuador, while Argentina moved ten points clear.

Six friendlies followed. The results were mixed and give little indication of the situation. Brazil thrashed South Korea 5-0 last October, before losing 2-3 to Japan. November brought a 2-0 win over Senegal and a 1-1 draw with Tunisia. The new year began with a 2-1 defeat to France in the United States, followed by a 3-1 victory over Croatia. A few days earlier, the team had crushed Panama 6-2, turning a 2-1 half-time lead into a rout with three goals in ten minutes of the second half.

Egypt

The Pharaohs will be making their fourth appearance at the World Cup. Hossam Hassan's team topped their qualifying group, five points ahead of Burkina Faso. Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti completed the group. Egypt have won eight and drawn two in ten games. Their group for the 2026 finals includes Belgium, New Zealand and Iran, a group that offers a real chance of a first World Cup win and a first-ever play-off berth.

Egypt reached the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations this winter, but lost to Senegal before losing on penalties to Nigeria in the third-place play-off. In March, the team won a 4-0 friendly against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah before drawing with Spain in Barcelona. Two more friendlies were scheduled before the World Cup. The first match, played a few days ago, ended with a score of 1:0 against a much weaker opponent.

Brazil vs Egypt: Author's Prediction

Recent friendlies have highlighted how unpredictable these matches can be. Motivation is low, players' fitness is uncertain and coaches often experiment with lineups. This will be the third meeting between these teams. Brazil won the previous two meetings: 4-3 at the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2-0 the following year. On paper, Ancelotti's team are the clear favourites, but betting on Brazil winning outright has little value and the outcome remains far from certain.
