Austria vs Romania: Betting Odds Overview

Austria

After finishing second in their last Nations League group, Austria earned a shot at joining Europe's elite through the spring playoffs against Serbia. However, they ultimately fell short with a 1-3 aggregate defeat.

Austria remained unbeaten at home during the group stage, securing commanding wins over Norway and Kazakhstan and drawing with Slovenia. They then settled for a 1-1 draw at the Ernst Happel Stadium before a 0-2 loss in Belgrade. Although they might stay in League B of UEFA's revamped Nations League, the priority for coach Ralf Rangnick is clearly securing a place at the upcoming World Cup.

Since their appearance at the 1998 World Cup, Austria has failed to reach the finals again, placing considerable pressure on their experienced manager to end this drought once and for all.

Rangnick’s tenure began promisingly, with flashes of potential at Euro 2024. Still, Austria trails group leaders Bosnia and Herzegovina by six points and Saturday’s visitors Romania by three.

The team convened three days earlier than usual to maximize preparation time, completing seven training sessions—a rarity in recent years. Recent performances have been solid but lacked victory. This time, the focus was on improving finishing, with Rangnick emphasizing shot frequency to capitalize on chances, particularly for Marco Arnautovic and his teammates.

Romania

Romania has faced Austria twice during World Cup qualifying, earning just one point across both matches on the road to South Africa in 2010. Their last meetings came in the Nations League nearly five years ago, when the "Tricolorii" edged a 3-2 win in Vienna but lost 0-1 at home.

Following a disappointing start to their most recent World Cup qualifying campaign, Romania cannot afford to drop many more points if they hope to contend for first place. Only group winners secure direct qualification to next summer's finals, while runners-up face a tougher playoff route.

Under Mircea Lucescu’s guidance, the team impressed with a strong showing at Euro and six consecutive Nations League wins, but suffered an unexpected home defeat to Bosnia in the opening round before dismantling San Marino 5-1 in Serravalle.

Romania is now playing catch-up, striving to qualify for its first World Cup this century.

If they manage to take something from Saturday’s clash before hosting Cyprus, it would be an ideal birthday present for Lucescu, who turns 80 next month.

Austria vs Romania: Probable Lineups

Austria: Pentz; Posch, Danso, Linhart, Mwene; Seiwald, Grillitsch; R. Schmidt, Baumgartner, Sabitzer; Arnautovic

Romania: Niță; Rațiu, Popescu, Burcă, Bancu; R. Marin, M. Marin, Stancu; Man, Drăguș, Coman

Aside from captain David Alaba, who continues recovering from a meniscus tear, Austria will be missing two starters from their last match. Goalkeeper Alexander Schlager is sidelined due to a wrist injury, and Feyenoord defender Gernot Trauner is suspended after his red card in Serbia.

Positive news for Ralf Rangnick, who called up several newcomers like Tobias Lawal and Nicolas Schmidt, is that midfielder Xaver Schlager has overcome a hip issue.

Romania will be without key players Radu Drăgușin and Ianis Hagi. Parma winger Valentin Mihăilă returns after missing the March international break due to injury.

Captain Nicolae Stancu, who just rejoined Drăgușin’s former club Genoa, is expected to start in the midfield trio as Mircea Lucescu favors a 4-3-3 formation.

Austria vs Romania: Author’s Prediction

Hard to beat on home turf, Austria needs to kick off their group campaign with a win over direct rivals to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive.

With a wealth of midfield options accustomed to disrupting opponents, Austria could unsettle a Romanian side already under pressure following their costly home loss to Bosnia.
