Angola

The Black Antelopes are participating in the African Cup of Nations for the tenth time in their history. The Angolans have never won the tournament before, and their best results are reaching the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010 and 2023. As for the current tournament, things are looking like Patrice Bommel's team may not make it to the playoffs. After two rounds, Angola has only scored one point, and next time they will play against the favorites of the group - a team that has already secured a place in the playoffs and first place in the group.

Angola started CAN 2025 with a somewhat disappointing 1-2 defeat to South Africa. The teams exchanged goals in the first half (midfielder Shaw scored for the Black Panthers), and when the game seemed to be heading for a draw at the end, Bafana Bafana snatched the winning goal. A few days later, despite a dominant performance, Patrice Bommel's team could not defeat Zimbabwe, settling for a 1-1 draw. The Black Antelopes took the lead midway through the first half through Gelson Dali, but conceded a counter-attack just before half-time and the score remained level. So Angola now need to beat Egypt – or at least avoid defeat and hope for favourable results in their other groups (and in their own too – who knows, Zimbabwe might pull off a shock).

Egypt

The Pharaohs are the most successful team in terms of the number of African Cup of Nations titles they have won. They can now boast seven triumphs in the continent’s most prestigious tournament. However, their last victory came in 2010. Since then, they have reached two more finals, but lost both.

In the previous tournament, Salah and company were eliminated in the round of 16, without winning a single match in their four matches. But in this edition, Hossam Hassan's team has a perfect record after two games. They started with a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe. Despite a clear advantage, the Pharaohs only scored the winning goal in injury time thanks to Mohamed Salah. And it was the team's star player who brought victory in their final match against South Africa.

Incidentally, this was Egypt's first victory over Bafana Bafana in the 21st century. This might not have happened without some brilliant saves from Mohamed El-Shenawy and a successful penalty against the South Africans at the end of the first half. Mo Salah was unexpectedly hit in the face by a defender and coolly converted the penalty himself. Moreover, a minute later, the Pharaohs were left with 10 men after right-back Mohamed Hani was sent off, which made the second half a real grueling affair. But Hossam Hassan's team held on for a narrow victory, securing a place in the playoffs and first place in the group.

Angola vs. Egypt: Author's Prediction

Angola have never beaten Egypt - neither in official matches nor in friendly matches. This is a seven-game streak. But this could be a good chance to break it. If the Pharaohs let them, of course. As mentioned, Hossam Hassan's team has already taken first place in the group, so the coach may well field a mostly reserve squad. Even under these conditions, Egypt will still be competitive against the Black Antelopes, who really need a win here to avoid missing the playoffs. A defeat would mean an early exit from CAN 2025.
