Algeria vs. Austria: Bookmaker Odds
Algeria
Lawrence in Kansas has been practically rooting for the Algerian team throughout this World Cup. Locals and the Algerian diaspora have been ecstatic about the team. The fans even put on a spectacular show before the game, forming a living Algerian flag and then waving goodbye to the team as it headed to Kansas City.
The US Ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Auben, told the media that the excitement at home was at its peak: "The whole country will be glued to their screens." The team prepared under close media scrutiny, and the organizers have introduced extra bus routes to ease congestion around Arrowhead Stadium.
Both teams have three points each: Austria has a goal difference of 3-3, Algeria 2-4. A draw would see both teams advance, Austria in second place, and Algeria among the best third-placed teams. Bookmakers have responded by slashing odds on a draw to an impressive 2.20.
Algerian and Arab media have drawn direct parallels to the infamous 1982 clash, when West Germany and Austria conspired to knock Algeria out. This time, the roles have been reversed, leading to speculation that both teams could settle for a mutually beneficial result.
A win and second place almost certainly means a meeting with Spain in the round of 16. Third place offers Algeria a much more favourable path, perhaps against Belgium, Canada, the USA or Egypt. Local journalists wonder how pragmatic the Desert Foxes' coaching staff will be.
Austria
A surprising debate has arisen in the Austrian media: will a defeat really suit them?
Austria only needs a draw to secure second place. However, that would almost certainly pit them against Spain at the start. The GMX.at portal published the headline "Absurd situation for Austria: why a head-on defeat by Algeria could be better." Sky Sport Austria asked whether third place could be more attractive.
Coach Ralf Rangnick has put to rest any talk of a deliberately poor performance. He told FIFA: "A draw moves both teams forward. A win guarantees the winner a place in the next round. The loser has to sweat. Our plan is simple – we want to win."
The captain and players are focused on correcting mistakes after the 0-2 defeat to Argentina. Midfielder Xaver Schlager criticised the team for a lack of confidence in the final third and promised more creativity, width and shooting against Algeria.

Algeria vs. Austria: Author's Prediction
Group J presents a rare scenario. Austria and Algeria have three points each, with Austria in second place on goal difference. A draw would give Austria second place, while Algeria would almost guarantee qualification from third place. At an expanded World Cup, no coach would bet on elimination for the sake of a chance defeat.
