Ferris State Hoops Rocked by Second Coaching Switch
BIG RAPIDS – Here we go again. The Ferris State men’s basketball team is going through a whirlwind of change this offseason, facing yet another coaching shakeup. Back in early May, Bobby Pietrak filled the void left by Andy Bronkema’s departure as head coach at Central Michigan. But Pietrak, who no one expected, has announced his resignation without even making a single play, citing personal reasons. That’s a punch in the gut for the Bulldogs faithful.
Sudden Change at the Helm
What a surprise turn of events for Ferris State. Just as a new season looms on the horizon, Pietrak made a sensational announcement Friday, leaving the team in a state of upheaval. Honestly, who could have predicted it? Especially after the university had so quickly absorbed him into its ranks. The timing was perfect, and you can almost hear the collective sigh from the stands at Jim Wink Arena.
Interim Coach Takes Over
Enter Alex Fodness, the assistant coach Pitrek brought onto the staff. Now he finds himself in the spotlight as the interim head coach tasked with guiding the Bulldogs through this storm while the program begins a nationwide hunt for a permanent replacement. Interestingly, Fodness is no stranger to the big chair — he has head coaching experience dating back to the 2021-22 season at Minnesota Community and Technical College.
Solid Experience
For the past three years, Fodness has honed his craft as an assistant at Division II Bemidji State University in Minnesota. Now, with the keys to Ferris State University's program — at least temporarily — in his hands, there's a glimmer of hope. It turns out the Bulldogs are counting on his experience to keep the ship from rocking too much in these turbulent waters. Can he stay the course? Only time will tell, but this unexpected turn of events has certainly surprised fans and observers alike.
