A First Setback
Also, because Malik Parsons could not make an impact, the Skyliners suffered a heavy defeat at home.
Everything had been going so smoothly until now. A dribble here, a magical shot there. No one could keep up with Malik Parsons. The 25-year-old was leading the scoring chart after four Bundesliga matchdays, averaging nearly 20 points per game. However, the Frankfurt Skyliners' star player had to learn the hard way what success can bring: In the home game against the MLP Academics Heidelberg, his opponents literally had him covered, giving him no room to breathe. Consequently, not only did the American experience his first setback in this young basketball season, but his team also went down with him: The Frankfurters lost to the newly resurgent third-placed team, 72:95 (39:43).
"I am certainly not satisfied at all," said Parsons. Although he managed to score eleven points, keeping him fourth in the league's scoring rankings, he was troubled by the mistakes that marred his performance in front of 4,760 fans in the almost sold-out Ballsporthalle: he missed all four of his three-point attempts, converted only three of seven free throws, and even fumbled a pass that went out of bounds.

After spending five years in US college basketball, he moved to Denmark in 2023, leading the Bakken Bears to a Danish championship and the ENBL title at the first attempt. However, on Saturday night, against a Heidelberg team that was versatile and accurate, Parsons struggled to make an impact.
"They made it very difficult for me to even get the ball," the shooting guard explained. Until halftime, his Frankfurt team managed to stay within striking distance. However, the guests put on a display of basketball artistry in the third quarter and quickly pulled away: not even seven minutes into the second half, the score was 43:69. Heidelberg's Damariae Horne single-handedly scored 14 points in the third quarter, while Alex Barcello (24 points) turned up the heat in the final section.

The reliable power forward Einaras Tubutis contributed 13 points, while playmaker Trey Calvin added twelve. Missing were Kamaka Hepa, Jacob Knauf, and Ed Croswell. "At halftime, we thought we still had something left in the tank," said Skyliners coach Denis Wucherer. "We wanted to increase the intensity. Then, early in the second half, we missed three or four open shots, and we fell apart subsequently. That cannot happen to us in that manner."
Next Friday, the Frankfurters, who have slipped to 13th place, will have a chance to redeem themselves. In their away game against the eighth-placed Rostock Seawolves (8 PM), Malik Parsons will again be in the spotlight. The US player remains optimistic, especially as he feels completely at home in Frankfurt. "I enjoy it. Not just basketball but also the lifestyle of the city. It’s really cool."
